People in the Quad Cities took the time to honor a civil war hero at Oakdale Memorial Gardens Sunday.
150 years ago, Quad City native, John Vale and his unit of about 16 people defended a union supply convoy from more than 100 confederate soldiers.
For that mission, he along with seven other men received the Congressional Medal of Honor.
For the organizers, it’s important to remember these heroics that helped keep a nation together, “It’s kind of the reason we are still one country today,” said Dustin Oliver, “I think it’s important to remember all the people that come before especially those who risked their life and the many that gave their life for this country.”
Oakdale Cemetery was built back in 1857.
