MidAmerican Energy is making sure its customers know how to stay safe during the upcoming winter storm.

The weight of the snow, combined with ice can create downed power lines. MidAmerican says you should never touch a downed line. Instead, call the company and report it immediately at 1-800-799-4443.

They say if you lose power, check your circuit breaker before you call to report an outage.

Make sure you have fresh batteries in flashlights and have extra batteries on hand.

People are also advised not to use a grill, space heater, or portable generator intended for outdoor use inside of your home. That can lead to carbon monoxide poisoning.

People should also not attempt to heat their home by using the oven.
