A long delayed memorial service is planned Sunday for a Floyd County Sheriff’s deputy who died in 1916.

Deputy Levi Bowers will be honored at 4:00 p.m. Sunday at his grave site in Rockford, Iowa. Organizers say Bowers’ great-grandson will be attending the service.

The Floyd County Sheriff’s Office just learned of Bowers’ death last month. That’s when the National Officer Down Memorial page contacted the office asking for a patch to display in Bowers’ honor.

Old newspaper articles say the deputy was shot to death while responding to a call that a gunman was trying to shoot a doctor outside of a local grocery store.
