Des Moines police are investigating a possible carjacking that left a man critically injured.
Police were called to 50th and Twana Drive on the Northwest side of Des Moines around 8:15 Tuesday night on reports of a man lying on the road and bleeding.
They say 36-year old Mike Wasike was on his way home from work when someone brutally attacked him.
“We don`t have a lot to go on, we know we have an individual who was found on the ground beat up, assaulted, critically, his vehicle was taken and is still missing at this point out and about,” says Sgt. Jason Halifax with the Des Moines Police Department.
Police are not out looking for the vehicle Wasike was driving. It is a 2005 4-door Gray Nissan Altima, with the Iowa license plate is 4-2-9-X-Q-Y.
Montana Baker says it would be unusual enough for a car to be stolen in this area, let alone that anyone would be assaulted.
“Everything around here is so calm all the time, and I just never thought it would happen around here,” says Baker.
Police say Wasike suffered a severe head trauma, and is currently in critical condition in a medically induced coma.
They say not being able to talk to him, is making piecing together what happened difficult.
“Unless we get a tip or a phone call or some information from someone who may know what happened we`re going to have to wait until he`s available for interview,” says Sgt. Halifax.
Police say until then, they will just have to wait.
Leaving people like Baker a little shaken, wondering if it could happen again.
“I don`t understand, I mean that`s just crazy, that somebody would do something like that,” says Baker.
Police are counting on the public for help in solving this case.
