On Friday, President Obama nominated Maj. Gen. Michelle Johnson to serve as the Air Force Academy’s next superintendent.

The position would make the Spencer native a three-star lieutenant general and the first female to hold the position, subject to Senate confirmation.

Johnson is a command pilot with more than 3,600 flight hours and has master degrees from Oxford University and the National War College at Fort Lesley J. McNair in D.C.

She is currently the deputy chief of staff for operations and intelligence for NATO in Belguim.
