FOOD PRIZE: Conservation Home And Abroad
The Des Moines based World Food Prize Organization is known for its work to improve the quality and availability of food throughout the world.
On the home front, the organization completed an eco-friendly project that was ten years in the making.
The good deeds that stem from the World Food Prize Organization are extensive, helping people all across the globe.
President, Dr. Kenneth Quinn knows how preserving and utilizing resources can help save lives in a career that included being a U.S. Ambassador to the Kingdom of Cambodia.
Back home on American soil the organization knew it could make better use of their resources.
“It’s close to impossible to take a 19th century building like this and make it the highest level of efficiency. There are only about 4 other buildings anywhere in the United States, 19th century, to ever get to that level.”
After over 10 years of planning and execution and $30-million later, the building constructed the highest level of an eco-friendly space called Leed Platinum.
“Leadership, energy, efficiency and design and it means ‘what are you doing to make your building energy efficient and resource conservation.”
They’ve put 90 solar panels on the roof to soak up the suns energy, placed 130 geothermal wells in the garden to provide heating and cooling for the building, to name a few.
“It`s just an architectural treasure.”
Ambassador Quinn says the way the organizations helps others around the world is no different than applying it to their own situations, “If we’re going to feed the world in the 21st century, we need to have sustainable agriculture. We can use everything up and have nothing left. You also will learn about what you can do to make a building amazingly energy efficient.”
It just goes to show you can learn a lot from your own teachings.
The World Food Prize is also creating a new million dollar education exhibit that they plan to open by the end of the summer.
