The Polk County Sheriff’s department says a car chase and crash east of the metro killed a Des Moines woman Sunday.

Around 1:30 p.m., Pleasant Hill police received a theft report from the Kum and Go at Northeast 60th Street and University Avenue.

Police were able to locate the white Buick a few minutes later.

When they tried to stop the car at northeast 56th street and East Oakwood, the driver began to slow down but then took off down East Oakwood.

Police pursued the vehicle until the driver lost control and crashed in the front yard of a home in the 4700 block.

Deputies say the vehicle struck a power pole and landed on its side.

The driver, 29-year-old Melissa Toillion of Des Moines was pronounced dead on the scene.  Her passenger, 22-year-old Justin Formaro was taken to the hospital with serious injuries.

The sheriff’s office says MidAmerican Energy was called in to repair the utility pole.

The crash also caused damage to several yards in the neighborhood.
