MURPHY’S LAW: Griner Grinder, Hawkeye Hope, Face Down

No one dominates his or her sport like Baylor’s Brittney Griner. It’s so much of a mismatch, that even a competitor like Iowa State’s Bill Fennelly set the Cyclones season goal to not have any Big 12 team sweep ISU, except Baylor. Met that goal too…

After Monday night, it’s three wins by Baylor over Iowa State. Game was over by halftime, but what in the world was Kim Mulkey doing with her starters still in with under five minutes to play? Fennelly already had his Irish up when Griner tossed Chelsea Poppens to the ground, and the officials called Poppens for the foul…

Iowa State will make the NCAA tourney again, but any betting man, or woman, would take Baylor against the entire field. That’s saying something…

#1 William Penn has played its way into the NAIA division 2 national championship game. Cool move by the Statesmen. Schools are for education, but nobody rallies around biology like they do basketball…

I think Iowa State is in the men’s NCAA tourney right now. A win over Oklahoma Thursday makes it a lock. It’s time ISU got back to winning in KC. The Cyclones used to extend the party every year. Lately, it’s been a quick exit. That will change this week…

I love Iowa’s draw in Chicago. The Hawkeyes will beat Northwestern, and have a fighting chance against Michigan State. I see the season heading to the NIT after a loss to the Spartans, but a win would put Iowa back in bubble talk, depending how other dominoes fall. A win in the next round, likely over Ohio State, and I think the Hawks are in. That seems like a lot to ask, but it’s better hope than many years past…

The Register’s Bryce Miller argued for another contract for Mark Phelps. SoundOFF’s Andy Fales says the sample size is long enough to know if that’s done, more mediocrity lies ahead. Both men made good, thoughtful points without making it personal, or pretending his way is the only way. Why can’t we have more discourse like that?…

I love how rowdy it gets at state bowling. File that under “don’t make assumptions”…

Wyoming fans who chanted “alcoholic” at Larry Eustachy embarrassed themselves, their university, and sports fans everywhere. Shame…

We’re fostering another dog. It’s a yellow lab named, “Jake”. At least that’s what we’re calling him. The nice folks at AHeinz 57 Pet Rescue found him roaming the streets for likely a month. He’s older, but so sweet, and love kids, especially boys. We already have two dogs, so I don’t think we can keep him, but if you’re looking for a lovable lab, let me know.

Jake, he’s been a good dog.

The Yankees really are desperate. They want to talk Chipper Jones out of retirement. I think Roger Clemens is still available too. And Yogi Berra…

The Vikings lose a lot of talent, and a big headache, by trading Percy Harvin. Wonder which is more worth it…

My T-Wolves-Grizzlies tickets to take the kids to an NBA game arrived. This is a great season to get good Minnesota tickets at a reasonable price through Stub-Hub. We paid just $25 each for lower level (plus shipping and handling).

I had a rough weekend, and if you’ll indulge me, wanted to thank a few people. I’ve had neck and spinal surgery, so back pain hits me from time-to-time, and has kept a camera off my shoulder for many years. However, Thursday I got zapped with the most excruciating pain I’ve ever experienced. First time I ever rated it a ten on a ten scale…

When Jenny got home to find me on the floor, she pulled our car into the front yard to try and get me to the emergency room. However, I got zapped again, and fell face down in the snow. We tried to move, and couldn’t. I’d rather watch Les Miz than call 911, but Jenny did. It was embarrassing, but necessary. The firefighters and paramedics showed up within five minutes, and immediately gave me something for pain, and got me to the ER in minutes. I can’t say enough about how professional, kind, and caring they were every step of the way. The nurses and doctors at Mercy were just as good. It was an awful day, made better by great people…

My colleague John Sears was welcoming his new baby into the world at nearly the same time, so Andy Fales, Michael Admire, Andrew Downs, Brandon McCauley, and many others stepped up at work to cover my absence at a really bad time. Thank you all…

As I type tonight, I’m going to take my boss, Rod Peterson’s, advice and sit out Tuesday. I felt like I was in a daze all day. Part medicinal cocktail, part pain haze. Anyway, I appreciate your patience…
