A Des Moines Police canine that was shot in the line of duty could be honored at the city’s newest dog park.

The Des Moines Park and Recreation Board wants to name the new park being built on Hubbell Avenue the Reno Memorial Dog Park.

In 2004, Reno was shot while he and Officer Tim Nading were chasing a suspect. Reno returned to service and won a national K-9 competition.

He passed away in 2012.

The city council has to approve the name before it becomes official.
