HELICOPTER CRASH: Iowa Soldier Killed

An Iowa soldier was among five soldiers killed in helicopter crash in Afghanistan on Monday.

Radio station KILR reports that 27-year old Sergeant Steve Blass of Estherville was in the chopper that went down.  The soldiers were based out of Fort Stewart, Georgia.

The cause of the crash is still under investigation.

Funeral arrangements for Sergeant Blass are still pending.

Rep. Bruce Braley released the following statement Saturday after learning of the death of Sgt. Steve Blass.

“My thoughts and prayers are with Sgt. Steve Blass’ family during this difficult time.  I’m thankful for Sgt. Blass’ service to our country and willingness to make the ultimate sacrifice to defend our freedoms.  I hope all Iowans will keep the Blass family in their prayers.”
