An Ames police officer is being called a hero for saving a teen’s life.

Officer John Barney responded to an accident Wednesday afternoon at Mortensen Road and University Avenue in Ames.

He quickly saw one car had flipped off the bridge and into the creek below.

Officer Barney jumped into the water and was able to break the window and cut the seat belt just as the girl’s head was going under water.

The girl didn’t suffer any major injuries in the crash.
