One man is dead after a shooting in Dow City early Saturday morning.
At around 1:40 a.m., authorities responded to a call saying shots had been fired in Dow City followed by a car crash near US 30.
“We were sitting there talking and all of sudden we heard a bunch of gun shots, we all kind of looked at each other in shock,” says Josh Reetz of Dow City.
Reetz and his friend Ismal Corona ran outside just in time to see a car flying down the street.
“When we ran out we seen this white Ford Taurus come down the street at a high rate of speed and he crossed the highway here and the car struck the house over there,” says Reetz.
They called 911 and ran over to see what had happened.
“The car was still running and it was in gear and he had the gas pedal to the floor and the car was filling up with smoke, so we had to break a window on the passenger side of the car,” says Reetz.
“At first we didn’t know what was going on, and I said we got to help this guy and we did our best to help him out,” says Ismal Corona of Dow City.
But Lary died from his injuries.
Reetz said Wingrove walked right up to them as they were trying to help.
“I asked him if he knew what happened and he told me he was the one who shot him,” says Reetz.
According to the affidavit, Wingrove also called 911 and told the dispatcher he had shot at a vehicle and waited at the scene until the authorities arrived.
Deputies found the gun used at the scene and after being questioned Wingrove was arrested for First Degree Murder,
The Crawford County Sheriff said it all started earlier in the night at Cheers Bar in town.
“The confrontation started at the bar and continued into the street,” says Sheriff James Steinkuehler.
The affidavit goes onto say multiple witnesses at the bar confirmed the two were arguing outside the bar when they heard gun shots followed by a car engine revving up.
Deputies found several shell casings a block from where Lary crashed, a scene that is still shocking for Reetz to take in.
Benton Wingrove is being charged with Murder in the First Degree and Going Armed with Intent.
He is being held at the Crawford County Jail on a $1-million bond.
