MURPHY’S LAW: Cyclone dance, NIT Hawkeyes, Bracket guy
By: John Sears
The wait is finally over, Iowa State is in the NCAA tournament. We all knew the Cyclones would be in but it took awhile for the name to appear on the screen. ISU is the 3rd to last team announced in the field. 45 minutes of sweating and waiting, but they’re in.
Fred Hoiberg was so nervous he left the watch party at his own house, and went up to his bedroom to watch the final bracket as it was announced. No worries Fred, you’re in:)
Iowa State will take on Notre Dame on Friday in ‘Round 1.’ Cyclones are the 10 seed, Irish the 7. I said yesterday this seed, or the 11, is MUCH better than an 8 or 9 seed. Is there really much difference between ISU and Notre Dame? No. The Cyclones can beat the Irish, and I think they will. Up next is the 2 seed Ohio State. Buckeyes are a favorite of many, but again, they’re beatable. Iowa State playing a #2 in the ’2nd Round’ is much better than having to play the #1 seed.
I’ve said all along ISU is good enough to play with and beat anyone. They’re also vulnerable to lose to anyone. It all comes down to shooting, if the Cyclones are hitting shots they can make a run to the elite 8, if not it will be a quick stop in Dayton.
Defense, defense, defense…Rebounding, rebounding, rebounding…Keys to winning, just in case Fred needed some suggestions.
The Hawkeyes are not going to the big dance, not surprising. Had Iowa beaten Michigan State in the quarters of the Big 10 tournament I think the Hawks would have gotten in, barely. I truly believe they were that close. But a weak non conference, high RPI, and lack of ‘Big’ wins keeps Iowa out. Instead it’s another trip to the NIT.
Hawks host Greg Lansing and Indiana State on Wednesday night at Carver. I hope the players come to play, I think they will. I know it’s not what Fran or anyone wanted, but they’re headed in the right direction. Next year its NCAA tournament or bust. Book it.
Get ready for ‘bracket guy’ at your work. The guy/girl who wants to talk brackets all day, and all night and claim they picked every upset. I love sports talk, but I can only break down a bracket with someone for so long. Don’t be that guy, or girl.
I love filling out brackets. This year will be extremely tough, who the heck is going to win?
I’ve been fighting a cold for a week. It started last Sunday the 10th, I lost my voice for 2 days, and it’s still lingering. The good news, it’s at the point where snot just comes dripping out of my nose at no particular time, so the cold is almost gone. I hope.
