SCAM RESURFACES: Money Wire Scheme Strikes Again

The Polk County Sheriff’s office is warning people of an old scam to get unsuspecting victims to wire money to thieves that has resurfaced recently.

In a recently reported case a grandmother received a phone call from someone claiming to be her grandson jailed in a foreign country and needing money wired immediately to be released.

The sheriff’s office says the scam artist usually knows minimal information about the person’s family. They warn that if anyone receives a call like this to be extremely suspicious and be sure to ask specific questions only family members would know.

Wiring money is similar to handing over cash, making it difficult to recover.

Suspicious incidents should be reported to local law enforcement.
