MURPHY’S LAW: Bracket Haze, Eustachy Wins, Alford Loses

murphys_law_400

I can’t wait to tell you about my bracket. In the Oklahoma State game…

I wouldn’t do that to you…

Good to see Larry Eustachy. He’s aged–haven’t we all? Except Andy and Bachman–but Eustachy can still coach. Eustachy wins his first NCAA tourney game in 13 years. Eustachy’s Colorado State Rams knocked out Missouri. Yes, Missouri. Eustachy never blamed anyone but himself for his exit, but it all started with those photos from Missouri…

Chris Hassel is no longer the only person in America saying the Hawks could be favored to win the Big Ten in basketball next season. ESPN’s Dan Dakich is now also drinking the black and gold Kool-Aid. Iowa will be an NCAA tourney team, but count me a skeptic for conference champion. And I mean real conference champ, not the Steve Alford version (won the conference tourney)…

There is no doubt Iowa is one of the best 68 basketball teams in the country, but that’s not how March Madness works. Instead, Iowa hosts the Stony Brook Seawolves, and wouldn’t you know, it’s being played about the same time as Iowa State and Notre Dame. I realize one game matters WAY more than the other, but I still wish we could spread out the fun. Won’t be long before we’re without college basketball for six months…

We know Iowa has more fans than Iowa State, so which game has more viewers in Iowa Friday night? I think it’s easily Iowa State, and for many reasons, including CBS vs ESPNU…

I couldn’t be more impressed with what I’ve seen from Des Moines so far in hosting the NCAA Wrestling Championships. Nice job. The Hy-Vee Fan Festival is a great idea, and sure to be a hit, especially since they can serve beer there, but not at Wells Fargo Arena for an NCAA event. Well, unless you’re lucky enough to have a luxury box. Wealth has its privileges, doesn’t it…

I think Cael Sanderson coaches Penn State to a third consecutive national championship. Cael won four NCAA titles for Iowa State, and represented the Cyclones while winning Olympic gold, so he’s on ISU’s Mt Rushmore. Still, some Cyclone fans still don’t understand why Cael left. He gave what I think is his most candid interview ever on the subject to Andy and me Wednesday. If you haven’t heard it, and you’re interested, click here. Cael shows up around the 15:00 mark, right after discussions on Lolo Jones’ over-sharing, and Mike Tyson once finding his wife in bed with a famous actor…

Des Moines bars are going to do record, non-holiday business Friday night…

Loved seeing my friend Tim McClelland calling balls and strikes from behind the mound at a spring training game. You know who else loved it? McClelland’s back and knees…

Classy move by Greg Jennings taking out a full-page ad thanking Packers fans…

Bears fans were just reminded the NFL is a business…

ESPN’s 30 for 30 “Survive and Advance”, the story of Jim Valvano and NC State’s miraculous run to the 1983 NCAA championship, is a fantastic documentary. This is ESPN at its best…

The most indelible tourney moment for me is when Magic met Bird. My dad worked at a TV store called Igou’s–not sure I spelled that right. It was 1979, and Igou’s had just gotten in this big screen TV. Weighed a ton, and it was crazy expensive. My dad opened the store, and invited my basketball coach to watch the game with us. I thought it was the coolest thing. I wanted Bird and the Sycamores to win, but Magic and the Spartans were just a better team. Still the most watched college basketball game of all time…

There really is a TV show called Splash about “celebrities” diving into pools?…

The only thing more predictable than a Steve Alford team making an early exit in the NCAA tournament is Royce White leaving his NBA D-League team. I sure it somehow all works out for Royce, but maybe he’s just not meant to play professional basketball…
