Des Moines police are investigating an alleged abduction or enticement attempt that happened Friday morning.

Police say a witness saw a 13 to 14-year-old female speaking with a man in a truck near 30th and Hickman. The witness says the girl looked scared and was trying to walk away from the man’s truck, which was following alongside her

After the witness approached the two, the girl said she was scared and the driver took off. The girl told the witness the man tried to get her into the truck.

The witness called 911 and was able to give a good description of the man and his vehicle, along with the license plate. Des Moines police say the license plate matched a truck owned by a registered sex offender. Police didn’t release the man’s name, but say he was arrested in 2006 for the same activity.

Sgt. Jeff Woody says, "Officers were in the area for approximately two hours looking for the vehicle. We actually contacted the county sheriff’s department where this person lives. They’ve been made aware the case has been made and that he’s listed as a suspect in it. Just due to the fact that his truck was involved, detectives will get the case this afternoon or tomorrow morning and they’ll work it first thing, they’ll try to contact him and see where his whereabouts were. And proceed from there."

The suspect is described as a white male in his 50s or 60s.

Police say the teen girl left the scene before they arrived and now they are hoping she will come forward.

Police say they don’t believe there is any danger to the public in connection with this incident but are cautioning parents to make sure their children know what to do if they are placed in a similar situation.
