POST OFFICE: Protests Over Service Reduction

The plan to end Saturday mail delivery has protesters rallying to keep the extra day of service, despite massive losses by the United States postal service.

The postal service loses billions of dollars a year and says it has no choice but to end most Saturday deliveries to save money.

Beginning in August, mail carriers will no longer deliver mail on Saturdays.

Iowans fighting against the proposal say the service will hurt small business owners, senior citizens and rural residents.

Stephanie Steward of the National Association of Letter Carriers says, “Reducing six day mail delivery is not an option and that people want letters and magazines and every type of mail class delivered to their house Monday through Saturday not just Monday through Friday.”

The National Association of Letter Carriers union staged similar events across the country.
