Des Moines police say what they thought was an attempted abduction last week was actually a registered sex offender attempting to pick up a prostitute.

It happened Friday morning near 30th Street and Hickman Road.  A witness called police saying a man in a pickup truck was following a young girl and trying to ask her to get in his truck.

When the witness confronted the driver he drove away.

Over the weekend, police located the driver, 57-year-old Charles Sargent; he told police he mistook the 13-year-old girl for a prostitute.

Sargent is charged with one count of prostitution and violating his parole. He is being held in Polk County Jail.
