If Grand Avenue is a daily part of your commute in Des Moines, you may have to make some changes.

The Grand Avenue Bridge over Walnut Creek closed at 9:00 a.m. Monday, for a seven-month-long construction project.

The nearly 100 year old bridge will be torn down, and a new one built in its place. The $3.3 million project includes five traffic lanes and sidewalks on each side.

There are signs set up for drivers to follow the detour.

The Walnut Creek Recreational Trail, which runs under the bridge, will be rerouted. People who use the trail can still cross Grand, although the path could be closed temporarily in the Fall as work is finished.
