EASTER HUNT: Unique Event For Kids With Special Needs

A unique Easter egg hunt was held Saturday afternoon in Des Moines at Drake University Stadium.

The event provided a place for families with special needs children to go, so they could participate in an Easter egg hunt catered just for them.

Easter egg hunts are part of being a kid, but not all kids have the same opportunities, that is until now.

“We really felt like we wanted to do something unique and to meet a need in the community and we felt this was the perfect way to do that,” says Event Organizer Derian Baugh.

Members from Journey Church decided Des Moines was lacking when it came to providing an environment catered to kids with special needs, so they created the special egg event.

Kids like Ava Cantelope, got the chance to hunt for eggs.  All the eggs had magnets inside, and with the use of a poll, she could do it all by herself.

“It`s a big deal for us, it`s a really big deal,” says Brenda Hummel of Des Moines.

Brenda Hummel says the event allows her daughter Andrea to just be a kid.

“She can finally participate in the activities that her older brother has been able to from day one, so it`s a big deal,” says Hummel.

Across the field, another hunt was taking place.

One geared towards children who are blind or visually impaired.

Kids like Emily Brown.

“This gives her the opportunity to get to do a normal Easter egg hunt with everybody else with the adaptions that she needs,” says Denise Brown of Des Moines.

This hunt used beeping eggs, eggs, that were easier to find.

The event allowed kids to just be kids, and sending a positive message, that Easter is a holiday for everyone, disability or not.

“There’s a key message everyone should know and it`s blind people can do anything no matter what,” says Emily Brown of Des Moines.

The event also hosted a “Quiet Hunt” which was aimed for children with autism.

350 kids participated, and 150 volunteers.  Organizers already have plans started for next year’s event.
