There were over 150 pool tables set up at Hy-Vee Hall Wednesday for the Iowa State Pool Players Association annual state tournament.

It is the first year Des Moines has hosted the event.

Over the noon hour on Wednesday players began the tournament by breaking on all the tables simultaneously.

About 3,000 people from 34-differnt Iowa leagues are participating in the tournament which runs through Sunday.

There are several leagues for players of all skill levels to compete including eight-ball leagues, nine-ball leagues, scotch doubles and a junior’s league.

Organizers say it takes a lot of work to prepare for this event. “They started Sunday afternoon assembling the tables and finished last night about 1 o’clock with everything, all the tables, lights, and everything put in place from an empty room basically,” Louie Bartels explained.

The event is free for the public to attend.
