The new version of Iowa’s bottle bill is moving forward in this session.

If signed into law, it would expand the 5-cent container redemption law to include non-carbonated beverages like water bottles and sports drinks.

Grocers and redemption centers would also be paid a bit more to handle the increase in bottles.

Supporters say if approved, the bill will keep more trash out of the landfill.

Opponents include many grocers, who say it will be difficult to accommodate the increase.

The bill now goes to the senate appropriations committee.
