Thursday, an Iowa Vietnam veteran will receive the medal he never formally received during his service.

Richard Plueger joined the Navy when he was 17. A little more than a year later, he found himself in Vietnam.

Plueger ran supplies, including ammo, tanks and jet fuel.

He survived firefights along the Cu Viet River, the dividing line between North and South Vietnam.

He transferred to Norfolk, Virginia and traveled the world serving on ships.

Plueger describes his time in the Navy, as a god experience where he met a lot of good guys.

Plueger will be awarded with five honors, including the Vietnam Service Medal with three Bronze Service Stars.

The award ceremony is Thursday afternoon at Congressman Steve King’s office in Sioux City.
