Just three weeks until Des Moines plays host to some of the biggest names in track and field and central Iowans get to come cheer them on.

Park Elementary School has taken its physical education students to the relays every year for the past 22 years.  But this year, P.E. teacher Laura Steward fears families won’t be able to afford tickets to relays, now that prices jumped from $10 to $17.

Many of the student’s families are low income and Steward says that shouldn’t be reason why kids miss out on this opportunity. “You know our Olympian here in town, Lolo, she came from some of the same backgrounds as my students and I’m sure she would run for free if she was asked to get other kids involved in track.”

Channel 13 reached out to Drake University, but they said they had no comment on the situation.
