OLD PARK: Community Playground To Be Dismantled

Over the weekend Ames residents will say goodbye to a longtime neighborhood playground.

The old Roosevelt Elementary school is being converted into a residential housing development. A portion of the school grounds will remain as a City park, but the land with the wooden play equipment will soon transfer to private hands.

Stacey Ross with Citizens for Roosevelt Park is saddened by the change, “it’s a very real sense of loss for the community. This whole community came together to build this playground in 1987. I in fact was part of the team that came together to take care of it… I was in 7th grade at the time.”

Volunteers will gather at the park Sunday afternoon to dismantle the park and salvage parts of the playground.  One piece in particular, a 50-foot long potluck table will be moved to the new Roosevelt Park.

Citizens for Roosevelt Park say the new park won’t be as large as the old one, but it could potentially feature a basketball pad and a science castle a playground.
