An eastern Iowa state senator says she’s not seeking a seat in Washington.

Cedar Rapids democrat Liz Mathis tweeted Saturday she won’t seek Bruce Braley’s congressional seat, “Thanks to those who encouraged me to run for Congress. Not the right time for me, personally. Have work to do in the @IowaSenate.”

Braley announced his candidacy earlier this year, after Senator Tom Harkin revealed he will step down at the end of his term in 2014.

Mathis told the Associated Press she considered a bid for the first congressional district but says she would rather focus on her work in the state and spend time with her family.

Mathis has served in the senate the past two years.
