Monday night a Des Moines dog park is expected get a new name in honor of a police dog that died after serving and protecting the city.

The Des Moines City Council will approve a plan that would name the new dog park on Hubbell Avenue after former K-9 officer, Reno.

Reno was shot in 2004 trying to protect his partner, Officer Tim Nading. Reno survived and went on to win a national K-9 competition.

He passed away in December, 2012.

The park will officially be called the Reno Memorial Dog Park.
