When you dial 9-1-1, you expect the person who shows up to answer your call for help. But a new report reveals a lack of training by some of Iowa’s first responders.

A Des Moines Register investigation reveals a wide range of problems that could impact the care for anyone in an emergency.

Some of the facts uncovered by the investigation:

  • 80% of the near 12,000 EMTs are volunteers
  • In the past 7 years, 450 providers have been disciplined
  • The State EMS Bureau has seen a 40 percent reduction in staff and a budget cut of over a third.
  • Half of EMS providers have ignored requirements to submit response times
