Governor Branstad issued a disaster proclamation for 10 counties in northwest Iowa Thursday. Counties included in the proclamation are Clay, Dickinson, Emmet, Kossuth, Lyon, O’Brien, Osceola, Palo Alto, Plymouth and Sioux.

People have been dealing with damaging winds, freezing rain, and power outages.

Folks have got a lot of cleaning up to do. The ice brought down large tree limbs that are covering garages, streets and front yards.

Governor Branstad says state resources will be available to those areas to assist in the recovery.

Our sister station in Sioux City, KTIV has been covering the storm. They say the town of Larchwood has been hit the hardest.

Residents there haven’t had power since Tuesday and they might not get it back until Saturday.

Icy weather took down about 14 miles worth of transmission line that feeds electricity to the city’s 860 people.

Power crews say they’re working as fast as they can to get things restored, but the speed of their work may depend on how well Mother Nature cooperates.

Until then, firefighters have been going door to door to make sure residents are okay and supplies have been made available at the community center.
