Fourteen people are being treated after a spill of a corrosive chemical at a clinic in West Des Moines.

It happened around 9:40 a.m. at 6000 University and forced the building to be evacuated. Des Moines’ hazmat crew responded to the scene.

Officials say about eight ounces of a chemical called Phenol spilled in a clinic. Fourteen people experienced issues ranging from respiratory issues to vomiting. They have been transported to local hospitals for treatment of non-life threatening injuries.

The spill was isolated to one clinic, but the entire building was evacuated. The hazmat crew is working to clean up the clinic where the spill happened and other parts of the building are now open.
