The Des Moines Fire Department is reminding residents of some items that are not allowed to be used within the city limits
Captain Steve Brown says stores in Des Moines recently began selling sky lanterns, which are like miniature hot-air-balloons made of paper.
Stores are allowed to advertise and sell the lanterns, but residents are not allowed to light and release them in the city due to the fire hazard they present. The fire department says because you cannot control their destination the lanterns can easily come in contact with material that will catch fire.
Similar to the lanterns, fire pits are also allowed to be sold in Des Moines, but it is unlawful to use them.
