Pet owners in Dubuque won’t be able to enjoy city parks with their pets anytime soon.

The City Council once again voted to keep the cat and dog park ban that has been in place since 1969.

The council voted 5-2 against the proposal that would have allowed pets on a 6-foot lead at certain parks in the city during a one-year trial period.

Backers of the proposal say the parks would be more enjoyable with pets, while opponents says they fear for the safety of their kids and people not picking up after their pooch.

The council is considering building an additional dog park instead.
