A day after the explosions at the finish line of the Boston Marathon and eastern Iowa bomb squad completed a controlled detonation on an explosive device found in a residential area.

Police say a Cedar Falls public works employee found the pipe bomb in a manhole Tuesday morning.

Officials brought the device above ground and set it down before determining the device was suspicious. Police evacuated all the homes in the area and a child care center went on voluntary lockdown.

KWWL reports the Waterloo Police Department Bomb Squad conducted the controlled explosion around 1:15 p.m. resulting in a muffled boom and a puff of smoke.

Officials say the residents who were evacuated can now return to their homes.

The investigation into the pipe bomb continues.
