AGRIBUSINESS: Delayed Corn Planting Not A Concern

National Corn Growers Association President Pam Johnson says slow planting progress this early in the season isn’t cause for alarm. The cool, wet spring has delayed planting across much of the country, with USDA reporting just 2%t of total corn acres planted by April 14th. That’s five full percentage points behind the five-year average.
Last year at this time, 16%t of U.S. corn acres were already in the ground. But Johnson notes the severe drought that plagued much of the country damaged the overall crop. With many areas getting much needed rain, she says a slight delay at this point could still produce an excellent crop, which will be buoyed by the near-record acreage farmers intend to plant to corn.
