NEW HOME: Wild Coming To Des Moines
It’s official, the Minnesota Wild will relocate their American Hockey League affiliate to Des Moines.
In a press release sent out Thursday afternoon the Wild said because an agreement could not be reached with the arena in Houston they have chosen to bring their AHL team, the Houston Aeros, to Des Moines instead.
It has been four years since Des Moines was home to an AHL franchise. The Iowa Stars later named the Iowa Chops played at Wells Fargo from 2005-2009.
The Iowa Wild, as they will be known, will settle into their new home in time for the 2013-2014 season.
Officials say having the NHL affiliate so close to the north will be huge. “It’s great, the Minnesota Wild are a professional organization, they’re very well run, they have a smart business and they do a great job,” Iowa Events Center General Manager Chris Connolly said. ” It’s very, very good for us geography wise, they’re close and we hope there is a lot of synergies there.”
A press conference scheduled for Monday at 11 a.m. will formally introduce the team.
