More than eight months ago, Mark Stiles went in for what doctors called a “routine back surgery.”
He was supposed to go home that day.
Three surgeries, and two separate life altering complications later, Mark is now just learning to walk again.
Mark has come a long way since then, but the unexpected hospital bills, expenses, and stress have built up for the Stiles family over these past several months.
So friends, family and strangers have got together to take some of that burden and show support.
The benefit is tomorrow in the Stiles hometown of Newton.
Thousands of dollars in items, gifts and packages have been collected for a silent auction, and a live auction, to take place during the evening.
Everything from food packages to hair products to Mark’s favorite past-time, Iowa football, will be for sale.
There will also be plenty of food and entertainment.
Michele Stiles, Mark’s sister-in-law and one of the event’s organizers says she knew Mark was loved in the community, but she had no idea just how many people would step up to help the family.
“It has been just a really humbling experience for me. just to see the people come forward with the generosity that they have shown and just really anytime we identified a need it just seemed like we never had to ask more than once and it was fulfilled by someone who may have been a close friend or family member or maybe someone who was just coming,” says Michele Stiles.
The benefit starts at 5:30 Saturday and will run until midnight. It will be held at the Newton American Legion, Post 11.
