Departing Senator, Tom Harkin originally said he wouldn’t “hand pick” his replacement when he retires next year.
With Congressman Bruce Braley emerging as the democratic front-runner, Harkin backed off that statement and gave Braley his endorsement Saturday afternoon.
Braley was the first democrat to announce his intentions to run back in February.
Harkin says he plans to work with Braley on everything from fundraising to promoting him on the campaign trail.
With this endorsement, Harkin believes any republican candidate will have a tough road to Washington, “I think it will be very clear to the people of Iowa. If they want someone who has Iowa values and deep roots in this state and has proven his effectiveness in Washington, they’re not going to look any further than Bruce Braley.”
Braley has a head-start when it comes to fundraising. On Monday Braley reported he’s received more than one million dollars in campaign contributions for this past quarter.
