Police say a man has locked himself in a home on the north side of Des Moines after he shot at officers.
Around 5 p.m., officers were called to a home at 3118 Wright St. on a property dispute between a man and a woman.
After police arrived, someone called to say the man was suicidal and had a gun. As officers talked with the man, he became angry so police called for more officers and backed off.
Sgt. Jason Halifax says the man didn’t have a gun near him when officers arrived but after police backed off, the man yelled at the six officers on the scene and fired at least one shot at police.
Officers shot back, but they don’t think the man was injured. The man shut the doors and locked out the officers.
Police and the SWAT team are at the house early Saturday.
Hostage negotiators have been talking to the man by phone but he remains locked in the house alone and has indicated he is not going to come out.
Police had cordoned off a three block perimeter with much of the Wright St. and Hull Ave. intersection shut down overnight.
While the man’s identity hasn’t been officially released, Sgt. Halifax said police may have dealt with the man earlier in the week in another domestic dispute.
This is a developing story and we’ll bring you more information when we get it.
