Professional golfer Jay Haas was in Des Moines Monday, but he wasn’t practicing his putt for the Principal Charity Classic, he was visiting with kids at Blank Park Zoo.

The zoo receives some of the money raised from the golf tournament to help pay for school trips. Haas was on hand Monday to help zoo employees show students some of the animals.

He also encouraged the students to try golf and visit a putt-putt course in hopes that they will find a love for the game. “You guys can’t even imagine being as old as me, but to be my age and play a game, and enjoy it the way we do is just of a dream come true,” Haas told the kids.

The Charity Classic will be held at a new location this year, the Wakonda Club in Des Moines from May 28 through June 2.
