Electronic alert notification systems warned Boston residents to stay inside during the nearly 20-hour manhunt for the bombing suspect.

Here in Iowa, There's a similar alert system in place. You can download the free app on your smart phone. It will alert you to an emergency in your area via phone call, text or email.

The alert system has been in place since 2008 and the number of people registering for it is slowly increasing.

“We currently have a 140 thousand people signed up for it and its really important i think for everyone else to get on the band wagon and to sign up for this really important system,” says Samantha Brear of the Polk County Emergency Management team.

Polk County anticipates more people will register for the alert system after what happened in Boston last week.
