The official announcement was made Monday morning that AHL hockey is coming back to Wells Fargo Arena for the 2013-2014 season.

The NHL’s Minnesota Wild announced its developmental affiliate will move to Des Moines from Houston and be renamed the Iowa Wild. The owner of the Wild, Craig Leipold, made the announcement in Des Moines Monday morning.

“Des Moines is an excellent sports market. Wild fan support is excellent not just the State of Hockey but throughout the Upper Midwest, including Iowa. We know fans in Des Moines will enjoy watching tomorrow’s Minnesota Wild stars. Our team will be entrenched in this community, particularly in youth hockey,” says Leipold.

The move is also bringing jobs to the metro. Polk County supervisor Tom Hockensmith says the Iowa Wild will bring 100 jobs to the community.
