The high school athletes hit the Drake track on Thursday.
A Dowling Senior is one of the favorites to bring home a title.
Jason Thomas is turning heads on the track. The future Cyclone is the defending Drake Relays champ in the 1600 even though he admits he surprised himself when he won on the blue oval 1 year ago.
"My thoughts were oh crap, oh crap I'm actually winning this thing. I'm probably going to get passed. I didn't and I was ecstatic."
Thomas raised his profile even more this past fall, winning the individual state cross country title, but you would never know that by talking to him.
"Cross country I like it, but I don't consider myself all that great at cross country."
He says his passion is on the track and the 1600 is his specialty, setting a new school record at the Jim Duncan Relays. His time of 4 minutes 12.69 seconds is the fastest time in Iowa in 34 years.
"I finished, panted a bit and saw the 4:12.69 and was pumped I didn't even feel tired at that point I was so excited."
The weather on Saturday is supposed to be in the 70's... sounds like perfect weather right? Not for Jason.
"I'm a really heavy sweater so usually when it's 45-50 I don't sweat as much."
He’ll bring his towel Saturday he’s got some sweating to do.
