Iowans along the Mississippi River have the daunting task of cleaning up as flood waters start receding.

The Red Cross in Davenport is handing out boxes of clean up supplies for flood victims.

More than a hundred people received cleaning kits Tuesday. Most of them are dealing with flooded basements.

Matt McDowell has lived in his Davenport home for 20 years. Now he’s drying out carpet and disinfecting items with bleach.

McDowell says you have to focus on moving forward in times like these, “You can’t get mad. You’ve got to keep on living. There’s no need to get mad. This is where I live, I clean up. Erase, replace as I always say.”

Gov. Terry Branstad has issued disaster proclamations for eight counties due to heavy rains and flooding.

Three were added Tuesday: Iowa, Lee and Muscatine.

Five were listed on Friday: Cedar, Johnson, Mahaska, Scott and Washington.
