A Des Moines middle school received a big national honor Wednesday.
Goodrell Middle School was awarded the Healthier School gold medal from U.S. Department of Agriculture Wednesday morning.
The goal of the HealthierUS School Challenge is to improve the health of the nation`s children by promoting healthier school environments.
“It just helps us to start young, and just keep these skills to keep going for the rest of our life,” says Courtney Downing, the program’s state ambassador.
In order to win the award, Goodrell revised menu items, modified vending machine offerings, offers healthier fund raising options, increased physical activity for students during the school day, and modified food offerings at after-school events.
