A crowd favorite Drake Relays event had spectators packed into Jordan Creek Mall.

The indoor pole vaulting competition began at 6:15 p.m. Wednesday.

Athletes and fans alike enjoy the unique experience of being up close and personal with one another. Athletes say the energy from the crowd pushes them to vault higher, especially Olympic silver medalist Bjorn Otto of Germany. He cleared just over 19 feet setting a new event record.

The woman going to the mall upper level is Yarisley Silva, also an Olympic silver medalist. Silva sets a new Cuban national record with 15 feet, 9 and 3 quarter inches.

This is the fifth year the event has been held in the mall.
