As expected, the closing of the Grand Avenue Bridge at 63rd Street is causing traffic congestion in Des Moines but not where you’d expect.

A marked detour leads drivers up 63rd or 56th Street to University Avenue but drivers are taking their own detour down Muskogee Avenue.

Neighbors say their once quiet street is now busy all day, especially during the morning and evening commutes.

They say the effects of the detour could be long lasting.

“It’s been hard to sell the house because of the traffic. That’s been the feedback we’re getting on people trying to look at the house. They love it but the traffic is absolutely destroying them,” said resident, Nathan Boyce.

Des Moines police say they are monitoring the area, and responding to neighbor’s complaints.

The Grand Avenue Bridge is scheduled to reopen to some traffic in September.
