Spring is finally here but the scars of a winter storm remain in northwest Iowa.

Governor Branstad is asking President Obama to declare five Iowa counties disaster areas.

Branstad sent a letter to the White House Friday asking that Dickinson, Lyon, O’Brien, Osceola and Sioux counties be declared presidential disaster areas.

The region was hit by a winter storm earlier this month.

Ice, wind and snow brought down trees and power lines. Thousands were left without power for nearly a week.

Branstad is asking for federal money to help rebuild in the area. An estimated $6 million of damage was caused that could be eligible under the Public Assistance Program.
