Des Moines firefighters say a house that caught fire early Friday morning is a total loss.

Fire crews were called to 503 Southeast 8th Street around 2:30 a.m. When they arrived flames were coming from the back of the home.

Firefighters say the homeowners were not in the house at the time of the fire, but a German Shepard was found dead inside.

The fire was under control quickly, but the cause is not known at this time.

District Fire Chief Dan Burke says, “We’ve got our investigators coming in to take a look.  Cause and determination will tell us exactly how it started and if there’s any other factors involved.”
