Pleasantville is full of intelligent students and brilliant teachers but one teacher stands out and is the recipients of this month’s Golden Apple.
Growing up Dennis Oliver aspired to be just like his brother Jerry Oliver, a forty-year veteran of Melcher-Dallas school district.
Now Dennis has also taught 40 years there have one more thing in common; a Golden Apple Award.
Jerry Oliver passed away two and a half years ago from pancreatic cancer. He won the award in 1998.
“He too received this award and this in some respects, to be compared to him is amazing to me, very flattering, and it adds a specialness to already a special occasion,” said Dennis.
Mr. Oliver’s students nominated him not only because of his incredible teaching abilities, but also the way that he cares about their general well-being.
When asked what inspired him most over the past forty years, Dennis replied, “you have those moments when the kids get it, and they say ‘yeah! Now I get it!’ you know, we use the phrase ‘when the light bulb comes on’. That’s the magic of teaching.”
