Sioux City police say a man suspected of shooting an officer is in custody.

US Marshals say they arrested Jamal Dean early Saturday morning as he was heading for the Mexican border.

Authorities say he was in the vehicle with two adults and four children.

Dean is being held in a Texas jail awaiting extradition to Iowa to be charged with attempted murder.

Sioux City police say officer Kevin McCormick stopped a vehicle Monday when Dean got out of the passenger side and began shooting.

One bullet struck McCormick in the head. He’s now recovering at home.

Officials have not said when Dean will be brought back to Iowa.
